What is a Dental Crown?

At its core, a dental crown is a small ceramic cap that fits over a weak or decayed tooth. Its main use is to keep harmful bacteria out of the treatment site, thus reducing the risk of oral problems. The crown’s tooth-colored material also lets it blend seamlessly with a patient’s adjacent teeth.

Given the points above, the best dental crown candidates have one (or more) of the following:

  • Highly Fractured Or Decayed Teeth
  • Large & Failing Dental Fillings
  • A Tooth Treated with Root Canal Therapy
  • Bite Problems That Need Correction
  • An Existing But Damaged Dental Crown

The Dental Crown Process

Our practice places dental crowns in as few as two dental visits. We’ll often “prep” the affected tooth for its cap at the first one, while the actual crown is placed at the second appointment.

Drs. Gajera and Patel will take several steps at your preparatory visit. First, they’ll numb your mouth so the “prep work” doesn’t cause aches; the most you’ll sense from it is some pressure. They’ll then remove any old fillings before rebuilding your tooth’s missing structure. Afterward, they and our team will remove bits of enamel to make room for your crown. We’ll then take an impression of your tooth that workers can use to craft the final cap over 2-3 weeks.

The second visit won’t involve much work. We’ll simply use dental cement to secure your final crown and ensure it blends well with your other teeth. Once that’s done, we’ll polish your cap and let you enjoy your newly-repaired tooth!

Of course, you could get our same-day dental crowns if you want faster care. We design and place these kinds in just one visit, shortening your treatment in the process.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Patients will enjoy a great many benefits from our dental crowns, including:

  • Smile Protection – Today’s dental crowns use strong material that protects your teeth and withstands your bite. To that extent, they'll help you avoid root canals or tooth extractions later.
  • Lifelike Looks – Our dental crowns are color-matched to your teeth, blending seamlessly with your smile. Folks won’t even notice you have one.
  • Versatile Treatment – Since they cover the visible surfaces of teeth, dental crowns can fix cavities, chips, cracks, and more.
  • Long-Lasting Results – A dental crown can last 5-15 years on average, and a well-preserved one can reach a lifespan of 30 years or more!
